Yuma Commute and Housing

Where should you live in Yuma if you work at MCAS Yuma or Yuma Proving Ground?

Start with which base, and which gate.Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma is in the city. Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is about 24 miles north. A home near one is not near the other.

This page shows what each drive depends on, what is under construction right now, and how to test a home before you choose it.

Yuma is two drives, not one

People ask where to live in Yuma. The more useful question is which base you will drive to, and through which gate.

The air station is in the city. Military OneSource says Yuma International Airport is less than a mile from it, and its Main Gate is on Avenue 3E, near Interstate 8.

The proving ground is outside the city. Military OneSource puts it about 24 miles north of Yuma. The Army's own directions from Yuma International Airport run about 20 miles up US 95, then turn onto Imperial Dam Road.

So a home that is a short drive to one base can be a long drive to the other.

We are not going to pick an area for you. What we can show you is what each drive depends on, from what the Army, the Marine Corps and Military OneSource publish.

The Two Drives

What each drive depends on

Same city, two different drives. Neither is better. They depend on different things.

MCAS Yuma

In the city
Gate

Main Gate on Avenue 3E

Off Interstate 8 at Exit 3. Military OneSource says the second gate is for commercial vehicles only.

How far

Less than a mile from Yuma International Airport

The Army's directions to the proving ground from the airport start here.

Without a car

No base transportation

Military OneSource says the air station has none.

Yuma Proving Ground

About 24 miles north
Gate

Depends on where you report

The Army lists Gate 1 (Walker Gate) for the Command Headquarters and Gate 2 (Howard Gate) for the Cantonment Area, the main post area. The proving ground also has large test ranges and its own airfields.

How far

About 20 miles up US 95 from the airport

Then, with a military ID or Common Access Card, 1.5 miles on Imperial Dam Road to Gate 1, or 5 miles to Gate 2.

Without a car

No public transportation

Military OneSource says a taxi or ride share is the other option, and it can be expensive.

Know which base you are buying for before you compare homes.

If two people in your home work at different bases, the home has to work for both drives. Test it both ways.

Right Now

What is under construction on the road to YPG

This began in February 2026. We last checked it on 15 October 2026. The live sources below are more current than this page.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is building two new roundabouts on US 95 north of Yuma, at Imperial Dam Road and at Aberdeen Road. ADOT says to expect delays and lane restrictions on US 95.

Why it matters for a home: Imperial Dam Road is the turn in every set of directions the Army gives to the proving ground. A drive you test during the work may change when it is done.

We are not going to guess when it ends. ADOT's project page gives no end date.

Check these before you drive it:

Use This On A Specific Address

Test an address against your report time

Four questions. Ask them about a specific address, before you fall in love with it.

Report time

Does this route work at the hour you actually report, rather than at midday? Check the route at your hour, not at the hour it is convenient to drive it. In Yuma, check the season too. Military OneSource says winter visitors come from October through April, and traffic is slow moving then.

Gate

Which gate does this route depend on, and is that gate operating in that window? Check the current MCAS Yuma gate hours rather than assuming. For the proving ground, ask your sponsor or your new command which gate serves where you will work.

Nights and weekends

Does your access route change outside standard hours? For either base, check whether the gate your route uses keeps the same hours at night, on weekends and on holidays. The air station posts its gate hours. For the proving ground, ask your sponsor or your new command.

Household logistics

What other fixed stops happen before or after the commute? A second drop-off or pick-up can matter more to the shape of a day than the miles do. In Yuma, that can include someone in your home who works at the other base.

The Boundary

What this page does not decide

  • It does not pick an area for you. It gives you a way to test an address against your own report time.
  • It does not rank areas of Yuma. It compares routes and gates. Which area suits a household is not something a web page can know.
  • It does not list gate hours. They change, and the air station's own page is the place to read them.
  • It does not predict when the US 95 work ends. ADOT's project page gives no end date.
  • It does not know your job. Where you report is yours to supply, and everything here depends on it.

A page can tell you which questions to ask.Someone who works this market can walk a specific home with you.

Common Questions

Questions Yuma military families ask

Where should I live in Yuma if I work at MCAS Yuma or Yuma Proving Ground?

It depends on which base you report to, and which gate. Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is in the city. Yuma Proving Ground is about 24 miles north, up US 95. A home near one is not near the other. Test a specific home by driving to your gate at the hour you report. My Military HQ does not rank areas of Yuma.

How far is Yuma Proving Ground from Yuma?

Military OneSource puts Yuma Proving Ground about 24 miles north of the city. The Army's directions from Yuma International Airport run about 20 miles on US 95. Then, with a military ID or Common Access Card, 1.5 miles on Imperial Dam Road to Gate 1 (Walker Gate), or 5 miles to Gate 2 (Howard Gate). Military OneSource says there is no public transportation to it.

Which gate do I use at MCAS Yuma?

Military OneSource says the Main Gate at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is on Avenue 3E, off Interstate 8 at Exit 3, and its second gate is for commercial vehicles only. Gate hours change, so check the air station's own gate hours page before you plan a route.

Is there construction on US 95 to Yuma Proving Ground?

Yes, as of October 2026. The Arizona Department of Transportation says work on two new roundabouts on US 95, at Imperial Dam Road and Aberdeen Road, began in February 2026, with delays and lane restrictions expected. Imperial Dam Road is the turn the Army's directions use. Check AZ511 for current conditions.

Does traffic in Yuma change in the winter?

Military OneSource's page for Marine Corps Air Station Yuma says winter visitors come from October through April, and traffic is slow moving then. A drive you test in summer may not be the drive you make in winter, so test a route in both seasons if you can.

Where every fact came from

Everything on this page comes from the Army, the Marine Corps, the Defense Department's Military OneSource, or the Arizona Department of Transportation. Where they do not say something, we left it out.

What we left out on purpose. We give no drive times, gate hours or traffic counts, because they change. We do not name or compare areas of Yuma. We do not cover base housing: see the MCAS Yuma housing office and the Yuma Proving Ground housing office. We do not cover schools, home prices or housing allowance.
