Blanchfield Army Community Hospital sits on the installation, so every drive to work crosses a gate. Fort Campbell does not run all of its gates the same hours. That turns gate choice into part of a housing decision, and it matters more for people who do not work a standard weekday schedule.
The obvious answer is incomplete
The obvious answer is live close to post. It is not wrong. It is incomplete.
Mileage assumes every route reaches the installation the same way. At Fort Campbell it does not. The base has more than one access point, those points do not all operate the same hours, and the hours are set by the garrison rather than by the road.
So the honest version of the question is not how far the house is from post. It is whether the way in works at the hour you report, and again at the hour you leave.
Where the commute actually costs you
Fort Campbell publishes its access points and their hours. Some operate around the clock. Others operate on posted hours, and some of the posted ones do not open on weekends at all.

What matters for a housing search is the shape of it rather than the specific times. If the route from an address you are considering depends on a gate that keeps posted hours, that route is available during those hours and not outside them. If it depends on a gate that runs around the clock, the hour stops being a variable.
A weekday daytime schedule can go years without meeting that difference. A schedule with nights, early starts and weekends meets it constantly.

Neither route is the better place to live. Route A may suit a household perfectly. The point is that the two are not interchangeable once your report time moves outside standard hours, and mileage alone will not tell you that.
Test an address against your rotation
Four questions. Ask them about any address you are seriously considering, before you make an offer rather than after.
Report time
Does this route work at the hour you actually report, rather than at the hour you happened to view the house? Drive it once at your real report time. A midday test tells you about midday.
Gate
Which access point does this route depend on, and is that access point operating in your window? Check the current garrison schedule for that specific gate rather than assuming all of them run the same hours.
Nights and weekends
Does your way in change outside standard hours? If your schedule includes weekends, confirm the gate your route depends on opens on weekends before you treat the weekday drive as the whole picture.
Household logistics
What other fixed stops happen before or after the commute? If your household depends on a drop-off that opens at a set time and your report time is close to it, the location of that stop may matter more to the morning than raw distance to post does. That is a variable to weigh, not a rule about what any household needs.

That depends on eligibility and current availability, and Fort Campbell handles both directly.
